Biography
Why does water in Earth's atmosphere condense into cloud droplets when and where it 确实如此,为什么水有时会结冰?这些问题是广泛的动机 过去十年来我在这里进行的研究。大气中的水无法启动 freezing unless it's really cold (about -36 C) or unless it is catalyzed by some foreign 矿物粉尘或某些细菌等物质。最令人困惑的方面之一 of the latter case is that it seems if the mineral dust is at the surface, the water freezes more readily than if the dust is immersed within the water. My students and I are trying to understand this phenomenon, called contact freezing, by conducting controlled, laboratory experiments in an attempt to isolate the most important physical and chemical characteristics of the particles that catalyze the phase transition. 我也是足球比赛结果团队的成员,设计了一个能够 to simulate cloud conditions in a turbulent environment, a one-of-a-kind facility that will enable us to investigate some of the most stubborn and vexing problems in 云物理和化学。
